Visa Information Please?

Is it true that you do not need a visa to visit Mongolia (for US citizens)?

How hard is it to get into Mongolia from China?

US citizens travelling for tourism can arrive at the border, or airport and get a visa free on the spot for several years now.

From what part of China? There is a train that goes from Beijing to UB a couple of times a week. Its a very nice ride, but getting tickets can be difficult.

      Thanks Luigi - that's a huge help.

I'll be in Beijing for starters, I haven't firmed up my itenerary as yet, but was hoping to start in China, see the Nadaam festival in Mongolia, then travel overland to Pakistan from there.

I noticed on your profile that you published an article on archery - it would be great if you would consider publishing something on the www.polosbastards.com/pb/ website.

They are always looking for travel writing on the road less travelled.

      cheers,

Flying from Beijing will be easier and only about 2 or 3 times the cost of the train as I recall, I've done both. Naadam (July 10th through 12th) is the busiest tourist season there so get your tickets early.

If you plan to take the train, try to hook up with a travel company. They can guarentee tickets where individually, you may get stuck standing on line the day before hoping they don't sell out.

China I know you need to get a visa in advance, and they offer single and multiple entry transit visas. Both China and Russia have restrictions on where Americans are allowed to cross the border from Mongolia, so keep that in mind when planning your overland route to Pakistan. Going by train should be no trouble either way.

I looked at the website you mentioned. Sounds interesting, will consider it.
